Romano: Juventus interested in Xhaka, but Sunderland no intention to trade

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an important update on the situation of Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, following growing reports that Juventus are exploring the possibility of bringing the veteran to Turin during the upcoming winter transfer window.

Despite the Italian club’s interest, Romano has made it clear that Sunderland have no intention whatsoever of allowing Xhaka to leave, firmly shutting the door on any negotiations for the January market.

In a video shared on his personal channel, Romano explained that Xhaka, now 33 years old, remains one of the most valued and protected players within the Sunderland squad. According to him, the club considers the former Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen star to be completely “untouchable,” meaning that no offers—regardless of size or urgency—will be entertained during the winter window. Sunderland’s leadership has repeated this stance both publicly and internally, highlighting their determination to retain one of their most influential figures.

Romano emphasized that the club’s position is not simply a short-term choice driven by the current season’s demands. Instead, Sunderland view Xhaka as a long-term pillar in their sporting project. Their confidence in him extends well beyond the winter, with the expectation that he will continue to play a central role at least until next summer. This future-focused approach underscores the high level of trust the coaching staff and management have in the Swiss midfielder’s leadership, consistency, and ability to shape the team’s style of play.

Since arriving at the club, Xhaka has proven his worth through both his performances and his experience. So far this season, he has made 14 appearances, starting every single match, which clearly shows the confidence the coaching staff have in him. Even though he plays in a deeper midfield role, Xhaka has still managed to contribute 1 goal and 4 assists, demonstrating his continued relevance as a playmaker and a stabilizing presence in the heart of the pitch. His influence goes beyond statistics, however; his leadership, tactical discipline, and communication on the field are key reasons Sunderland see him as irreplaceable.

While Juventus may continue to monitor the situation—especially as they seek experienced midfield reinforcements—Romano’s update indicates that any move in January is essentially impossible. Sunderland’s stance is absolute: Granit Xhaka is not for sale, and the club is prepared to resist all forms of pressure during the winter transfer period.

For now, Xhaka remains firmly committed to Sunderland’s ambitions, and the club remains equally committed to keeping him at the center of their project.
