Mbappé is the 4th player in 21st century to score 60 goals in a calendar year

Kylian Mbappé has reached yet another remarkable milestone in his already extraordinary career, becoming only the fourth player in the 21st century to score 60 goals in a single calendar year.

The French superstar achieved this feat during Real Madrid’s 1–1 La Liga draw on Saturday, a match in which he registered his 60th strike of 2025. What makes his achievement even more impressive is that he has done so with five matches still remaining before the year closes, giving him a realistic chance of climbing even higher on the all-time list for calendar-year scorers in modern football.

So far, Mbappé’s 2025 goal tally includes 53 goals for Real Madrid across all competitions and an additional seven for the French national team. His explosive form has not only strengthened Madrid’s title ambitions but has also kept him firmly in the spotlight as a leading contender for the next Ballon d’Or. With 14 league goals already, he currently tops the La Liga scoring charts and continues to demonstrate the consistency and scoring instincts that have long defined his rise to global superstardom.

In the context of the 21st century, very few players have been able to reach the 60-goal mark within a single calendar year. Mbappé now joins an elite group of footballers who have displayed extraordinary scoring efficiency over an extended period.

The top of this list is famously led by Lionel Messi, whose historic 2012 season saw him record a staggering 91 goals — a number widely considered one of the most unbreakable records in the sport. Messi’s achievement sits comfortably at the summit of modern-day football statistics, symbolizing the peak of individual goal-scoring excellence.

Behind Messi, several other greats have produced unforgettable scoring runs, but only three players before Mbappé have crossed the 60-goal threshold in one calendar year this century. Mbappé now becomes the fourth to do so, and his current place on the all-time list is sixth among the 21st century’s highest single-year scorers.

This alone highlights how rare and significant his accomplishment is, especially considering the competitive era in which he plays and the number of matches required to sustain such form.

Reaching 60 goals before the end of the year opens the door for Mbappé to potentially enter even more exclusive company. With five games left in 2025, every match presents an opportunity for him to push his total further and close the gap between himself and some of the other historic goal-scorers who occupy the top spots. Should he continue at his current pace, he might finish the year with a number few players have ever touched.

As Real Madrid continues its push for domestic and European success, Mbappé’s form remains one of the club’s biggest assets. Fans and analysts alike have begun to discuss his Ballon d’Or chances with increasing seriousness, as his performances have consistently been decisive and match-defining.

Whether he adds more goals before the year concludes or not, Mbappé’s 2025 calendar-year scoring record has already secured its place as one of the standout achievements of modern football.
